Explanations of the Provincial Competitions Rayner Trophy : This is a hiking competition with bases aimed at a team of 4 seniors (over 14,5 years). It is an overnight hike aimed at advanced scouting skills covered in First Class and Explorer level. Gordon Shield : This is a camping competition with various bases designed for a standing patrol. It is an overnight camp aimed at testing camping skills covered throughout the advancement system. Upton Shield : This is a hiking competition with bases aimed at a team of 4 juniors (under 14,5 years). It is a day hike aimed at basic scouting skills covered in Pathfinder and Adventurer level. Kontiki : This is a raft building competition held at the Sea Scout Base in Sandvlei. The entire troop, including parents, help with raft construction. A team of scouts then live on the raft for 48 hours, completing various tasks. There is also a Fringe section for scouts left on the shore. Orienteering : There are three sections to this competition. A junior day event, a senior night event and a scouter night event. Teams of four are divided into two groups that find beacons using compass bearings. Quinn Trophy : This is a fun day for the entire troop. Various fun activities and games are the programme. JOTA is usually run at the same time. Sea Scout Regatta : This is a race between Sea Scout troops but is available to all. Rafts can be hired for the day by any troop so long as the helmsman has his watermanship and sailing scoutcraft badges. HV Marsh Award : This is a National Award and is given to the Group with the best Quarterly Newsletter (ours being Squadport) in the country. |
